Pharmacy Technician: How Much Do You Make Hourly?

I have been working as a pharmacy technician for half a year now but I only make $8.75. I was wondering if this is close to the normal range or if I’m getting the short straw. Thanks!

Super lucky. $23.5 an hour. about 8 years experience. I am fully aware this is on the high end.

Small independent retail here. I am F, 22, have a college degree in Biology (and Painting) and plenty of compounding experience (though i currently do not do any compounding at this job). Started here at $17. I have a fantastic boss.

The first pharmacy I worked at I was making $14 after 2 years. Where I’m at now, it only took me 8 months to hit that. I’m a couple months I’ll get a raise up to $15. I think (as of now) I’ll eventually top out around $21 an hour.

That’s a very high amount for a starting salary at a new place. Then again, I’m sure you were able to bargain for more considering the amount of experience under your belt. If you can top out at $21/hr, then you are set for life pretty much.

I only had 2 years under my belt. Only thing that really helped was that Costco starts all employees quite a bit over minimum wage. And a pharmacy technician position is on a slightly higher pay scale.

I started at a retail pharmacy a little over 2 months ago at $8.10/hour. After I was there for 6 weeks corporate decided all their techs weren’t making enough and gave everyone raises, so now I’m making $9.15/hour. Once I’m certified I’ll get another raise.

I’m not registered. I live in PA, and I don’t think registration/certification is required. At the place I’m working at they’ll schedule your tests and pay for your certification though. I was told that there’s 2 certification tests and I should be taking the first exam about 3-4 months after being hired. In all honesty I’m not entirely sure how the process to become a certified/registered tech works. I graduated with a degree in biology and was originally on a completely different career track, but made and 11th hour decision that I no longer wanted to do that. I like science and medicine and was pretty much just throwing darts to see what sticks, with the pharmacy being the first job offer I got. I do enjoy it though, and I like learning about different medications. It’s made me a better pharmacy customer as well… I used to be one of those people that would call in a refill and show up 15 minutes later for it, now I’m embarrassed that I was one of those people.

I get 9.50. I only started in May at 8.60, and then got the raise when I completed training.

Over $20/hour. Registered and certified. Worked retail for about 10 years, but the pay was close to what I make now. I’ve been lucky. Now in hospital pharmacy and loving it!

I’m certified in a large scale hospital working in Inpatient and make $14.93/hr!
Retail doesn’t always pay too low, I made $9.70/hr at Wal-Mart without certification and experience!

I’m uncertified and started at $10/h. Walgreens. I was on the floor for about two years then got promoted back there.

When I began at the grocery chain I am currently employed by the starting wage was $10.50. I’ve been doing it for about 3 1/2 years now and am topped out at $15.10. Since I’m at the current pay ceiling more than likely I won’t get another raise for about 4 years. But I feel really fortunate to work for the company that I do. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics keeps information about pharmacy technician. It’s shown state by state and gives you information like how many people are employed in that position and the average wage for that state. So if you don’t feel as though you don’t make as much as you should you either don’t work for a good company or happen to be in a region that doesn’t pay well in general.

I’m a Senior Certified Tech since 2010, I make the minimum for my title with the company of $13.00/hour.

I work retail.
I started out on the sales floor and when I moved to the pharmacy in February I was at $8.47.
2 months later when I was full-time in the pharmacy, I was bumped up to $11.25.
I just got my national certification 2 weeks ago and as of yesterday I am now at $13.

I work at Walgreens and make $10/hr starting. I just started this month.
Once I get certified in a few months I’ll be bumped to $11/hr and next year around October or so I should be looking at another bump to total $12/hr.
Before this I had no experience in any sort of pharmacy setting and I had no related jobs. I also did not work for Walgreens.

Hospital-inpatient. Certified, per-diem for 6 years, hired mainly as an IV technician. $20/hr and I believe the full-time employees make around $17/hr.

Target in California, registered/certified about 3 years, started as a clerk a year before that. Currently make $15.50 hourly. For reference: That’s almost enough to let me afford a 1-bedroom apartment nearby without living paycheck-to-paycheck.
At our store base pay for techs is $11.50. Plus $1.00 for certification, plus experience, plus a token merit raise every year, plus $1.00 or $1.50 (can’t remember) for lead tech (which I’m not).
